DURHAM, NC – Durham police have identified the victim in a fatal shooting that took place outside a local food truck on Friday afternoon.
According to the Durham Police Department (DPD), officers responded to an incident initially classified as an “unknown officer problem†around 12:30 p.m. in the 4200 block of Garrett Road. Upon arrival, they received additional information about a shooting in the 2600 block of NC Highway 55.
At the scene, officers found a man suffering from gunshot wounds. EMS pronounced him dead on-site.
On Monday morning, authorities identified the victim as 35-year-old Arturo Velazquez Chavez of Durham.
Investigation and Arrest
A crime scene investigation outside Mexican JV American, a taco truck parked near Taco Ardiente, revealed multiple bullet casings, with at least one marker visible inside the food truck itself.
Later on Friday night, Durham police arrested 32-year-old Jeisonson Munoz-Valencia, also of Durham, charging him with murder. Authorities confirmed that Chavez and Munoz-Valencia knew each other, suggesting that this was not a random act of violence.
Ongoing Investigation
DPD officials stated that while the suspect is in custody, the case remains under investigation. At this time, police believe the incident was isolated and does not pose a continued threat to the public.
