Durham, NC – Quick-thinking Durham County Sheriff’s deputies are being credited with saving a man’s life after he suffered a medical emergency Tuesday morning at the clerk’s office.
According to the Durham County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to the scene after a man, identified as a business owner who works in the building, collapsed and sustained a head injury. Upon arrival, they found the man lying on his back, unresponsive and not breathing.
Life-Saving Efforts
The deputies immediately began administering life-saving measures, including utilizing an automated external defibrillator (AED) located in the court building. These devices, designed to deliver a potentially life-saving shock to the heart in cases of cardiac arrest, are critical tools in emergency situations.
When EMS arrived, they continued the life-saving efforts initiated by the deputies and successfully revived the man. He was then transported to a local hospital for further treatment. As of now, no updates on his condition have been released.
Sheriff’s Office Commends Deputies
In a statement, Sheriff Clarence F. Birkhead praised the deputies for their decisive actions.
“I am proud of the quick action taken by these deputies today,” Birkhead said. “They did what they are trained to do when someone needs help. We are all praying that the man they helped today makes a full recovery.”
AEDs in Public Spaces: A Lifeline
This incident highlights the importance of AEDs in public buildings and the training provided to first responders. According to the American Heart Association, immediate CPR combined with AED use can double or triple the chances of survival for cardiac arrest victims. Durham County’s investment in these devices and the training of deputies has once again proven invaluable.
Community Safety Initiatives
The Durham County Sheriff’s Office has long been a proponent of community safety initiatives, including ensuring public spaces are equipped with AEDs. Additionally, deputies receive routine training in CPR and emergency response to better serve residents in critical situations.
