Durham Mayor Calls for Community Action After Teen’s Tragic Death in Weekend Shooting

DURHAM, NC – A 15-year-old boy was fatally shot at the Magnolia Pointe apartment complex on Saturday afternoon, sparking calls for action from Durham Mayor Leonardo Williams. As police continue to investigate, the mayor urged the community to unite and prioritize public safety to prevent more tragedies.

The incident occurred around noon, when a gunman fired into a vehicle before fleeing the scene. Durham Police have not yet identified any suspects, and the victim’s name has not been released due to his age.

A Call to Action from City Leadership

In the aftermath of the shooting, Mayor Williams emphasized the importance of collective responsibility in addressing violence in Durham.

“Our children are dying on the streets of Durham,” Williams said. “No one closes city hall. No one comes here to say, ‘Hey, here’s the alarm.’ I need everyone to come forward and make this issue more important.”

The mayor urged residents to attend city hall meetings to advocate for public safety and influence the city budget, directing funds toward effective community programs and initiatives.

“If homicides on Durham’s streets are a big concern—which they are, as shown by surveys—then people need to come to city hall,” he said. “We can’t only react after tragedies; we need to be proactive in creating safer spaces for our children.”

Community and Schools Respond

The tragic loss of a young life has left a ripple effect across the city. Durham Public Schools confirmed that the victim was a student in the district and extended condolences to his family and friends.

“We are deeply saddened by the loss of our student, who will be greatly missed,” the district said in a statement.

Lettered signs of remembrance were visible in the parking lot of the apartment complex, where the community gathered in mourning over the weekend.

Programs to Address the Crisis

Mayor Williams also highlighted the need for investment in youth programs, such as the Bull City Future Fund, which provides safe spaces and activities to keep children engaged and away from harmful environments.

“These programs are vital,” Williams said. “We must give our children opportunities to thrive in positive and safe settings, ensuring they don’t fall victim to the streets.”

The Broader Challenge of Public Safety

Violent crime continues to be a pressing issue in Durham. According to surveys, public safety remains the top concern for residents. While law enforcement works to solve crimes, leaders like Mayor Williams insist that long-term solutions require a united effort between the government, community organizations, and families.

“We all have a role to play,” Williams said. “I will do my part as mayor, but I need the community to step up, too.”
