North Carolina Central University (NCCU) has announced the creation of the Institute for Artificial Intelligence and Equity Research, a historic initiative made possible by a $1 million grant from Google. This program, the first of its kind at a Historically Black College and University (HBCU), aims to position NCCU as a leader in artificial intelligence (AI) innovation, equity, and workforce development.
The announcement, made by NCCU Chancellor Dr. Karrie Dixon, marks a significant milestone in the university’s history. “Our mission is clear: to innovate, inspire, and shape the next generation of leaders through artificial intelligence,” Dixon stated. The institute is designed to provide research opportunities, workforce training, and academic studies for up to 200 students, focusing on preparing underrepresented communities for careers in AI-related fields while fostering diversity and equity.
The initiative is expected to have far-reaching impacts, benefiting not only Durham but also the state of North Carolina and the broader AI research landscape. Durham Mayor Pro Tempore Mark-Anthony Middleton called the announcement a pivotal moment, stating, “This is a big day. We are now leaders in this space.” Rep. Zack Hawkins also emphasized the importance of the institute, highlighting its potential to drive technological innovation while supporting the local community.
Google’s Global Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Officer, Melonie Parker, underscored the importance of this collaboration, noting that the center will equip students with critical skills, enable extensive research, and engage with the community. “This center ensures we are moving forward in an unprecedented way, with commitment and courage,” Parker said.
The institute is set to open in early 2025 in a state-of-the-art building under construction at Fayetteville and Lawson Streets. It will serve as a leading AI hub within the HBCU network, addressing the underrepresentation of minority groups in technology fields and positioning NCCU as a trailblazer in AI research and education. Chancellor Dixon remarked, “This is huge,” acknowledging the program’s groundbreaking role in advancing equity and innovation in AI.
By partnering with Google, NCCU is paving the way for a more inclusive future in the tech industry while reaffirming its commitment to academic excellence, community engagement, and social justice. This initiative symbolizes a bold step forward for HBCUs, establishing a model for other institutions to follow and ensuring that the next generation of leaders is prepared to excel in the rapidly evolving field of artificial intelligence.
