The City of Durham is providing residents with complimentary “Fat Trappers” to help prevent sewer blockages caused by fats, oils, and grease (FOG). Improper disposal of FOG can lead to clogged pipes, plumbing issues, and sewage overflows, posing environmental and public health risks.
Fat Trappers are small, convenient containers designed for kitchen use, allowing residents to collect and properly dispose of cooking grease. Durham residents can request a free Fat Trapper or refill bags by completing an online form on the city’s website. Due to high demand, deliveries may be delayed by several weeks, but efforts are underway to fulfill all requests promptly.
The city’s initiative aligns with its ongoing FOG reduction program, which has contributed to a decrease in sewer spills and overflows in recent years. The latest Annual Sewer System Report provides detailed information on wastewater treatment processes, compliance with permit conditions, and maintenance activities. The report also includes data on spills and overflows that occurred during the fiscal year.
Residents are encouraged to utilize Fat Trappers to aid in maintaining the integrity of the city’s sewer system and to prevent potential environmental hazards.
