Man Fatally Shot in Durham; Police Seek Public’s Assistance

A fatal shooting occurred Tuesday morning near the intersection of Holloway Street and Brye Street, leaving one man dead, according to the Durham Police Department. Officers responded to the scene around 9:40 a.m. after receiving a report of gunfire.

Upon arrival, police located an adult male victim with gunshot wounds. Emergency Medical Services (EMS) were called to the scene but pronounced the man dead shortly after arriving. The identity of the victim has not been disclosed, pending family notification.

The shooting prompted Durham Police to close Holloway Street from Guthrie Avenue to Raynor Street. Officials announced that the road closure would likely extend for several hours as they carry out an investigation. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and seek alternate routes until the road is reopened.

Tuesday’s incident adds to Durham’s ongoing struggle with gun violence, which has been a focal point for both city officials and community groups. Data from the Durham Police Department indicates that the city has seen a rise in violent crimes over recent years. According to their 2023 mid-year report, there was a 15% increase in gun-related homicides from the previous year, consistent with a broader trend affecting urban areas across the U.S. The National Institute of Justice reported similar findings, highlighting a nationwide uptick in homicides since 2020, primarily related to firearms.

Local community organizations, such as Bull City United, have been actively working to mediate conflicts and prevent retaliatory violence. “We are constantly reaching out to at-risk individuals and communities, trying to prevent these tragedies before they happen,” said a spokesperson for the organization.
