DURHAM, NC (WNCN) — Two people escaped a house fire in the city Sunday night in a new development in east Durham, officials said.
The fire was reported shortly before 8 p.m. in the 5900 block of Woodlawn Drive, near NC 98 between Kemp Road and Olive Branch Road, according to Durham Fire Department officials.
The first crews to arrive saw the fire in the backyard and 39 firefighters responded, a Durham fire news release said.
The fire was under control in about 15 minutes but it was “extensive fire, heat and smoke on the first and second floors,” fire officials said.
Homes on each side of the city fire sustained side damage from flames and heat.
“A swift attack prevented the fire from spreading to other houses on both sides,” officials said in a release.
The two adults who escaped were helped by the American Red Cross.
Until 10:00 p.m., the firefighters were still at the scene.

Duke Energy and Dominion Energy responded and cut off power and gas to the home.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
Durham crews were assisted by the Redwood Fire Department and Durham County EMS.
